Meditation Blankets

Meditation Blankets

A meditation blanket is not a yoga blanket. They are used differently and the difference matters more than the name suggests.

The difference

A yoga blanket is folded and sat on, used for height under the hips or padding under the knees. It is a prop, and it gets firm cotton for that reason.

A meditation blanket is worn. It covers the legs and lap while you sit, holding warmth through a long stillness. It wants softness and drape rather than firmness. A blanket that is good for one job is usually mediocre at the other.

Sitting in a chair

Most people who sit for long periods eventually sit in a chair, whether through age, injury, or simple practicality. The chair introduces its own problem. Your legs are unsupported below the knee and they get cold first.

Our Dhyanam blanket is cut for exactly this. It covers the lap and falls over the knees without pooling on the floor or catching under the chair legs when you stand.

Sitting on the floor

On the floor you want length. The blanket has to reach over crossed legs and still cover the feet, which are the first thing to go cold and the last thing people think about.

What we carry

Our blankets and asana mats are sewn by hand by Laura in San Diego and Neelam in Canada. Not many, and not quickly. Each one is made by a person who knows what it is for.

Questions

Chair or floor?
Sit the way you actually sit, not the way you intend to. A chair blanket on the floor leaves your feet exposed.

Is wool too warm for a heated room?
Rarely. Body temperature falls during a long sitting, so a blanket that feels warm at the start is usually right by minute thirty.

Can I use it as a yoga prop?
It will work, but a meditation blanket is soft where a prop should be firm. If you need height under the hips, use a cushion.
