Meditation Shawls

Meditation Shawls

A shawl is the first thing many people reach for when they sit, and the last thing they think to buy well.

What a meditation shawl is for

Body temperature drops when you sit still. Breathing slows, circulation settles, and after fifteen or twenty minutes the cold arrives, usually at the shoulders and the back of the neck. A shawl is the simplest answer to that.

It does something else too. Drawing a cloth around yourself marks a boundary. Inside it is practice, outside it is the rest of the day. Many people find the gesture itself settles the mind before the sitting has properly begun.

Choosing one

Weight. Wool holds warmth and breathes, which matters if you sit in a cool room or early in the morning. Lighter cotton and silk suit warmer rooms and travel. If you sit indoors year round, wool is the more forgiving choice.

Size. A wrap of roughly 68 by 26 inches sits on the shoulders and stays put. Something closer to 68 by 45 will cover the lap and knees as well, which matters if you sit on the floor.

Quiet. Anything stiff or slippery will ask for adjustment. A shawl you keep correcting is a shawl that keeps interrupting you.

What we carry

Our wool wraps come from the Embrace line, made to be worn for long sittings. The Om scarves are hand blocked in India, printed with scripture, light enough for warm rooms and for carrying.

Questions

Can I use a regular blanket instead?
You can, and many do. A shawl stays on the shoulders without being held, which is the practical difference.

Wool or silk?
Wool for warmth and for cold rooms. Silk for warm climates and for travel, where weight matters more than insulation.

How do I care for it?
Wool wraps should be aired rather than washed when possible, and hand washed cool when needed. Lay flat to dry.
