What Is a Meditation Asana? Wool Mat vs. Yoga Mat
Share
In the Kriya tradition, an asana is more than a mat. It is the seat set aside for meditation: a place you return to each day, and a layer between you and the floor.
Why wool and silk
Paramahansa Yogananda taught that the meditation seat should be insulated, so it is traditionally made of wool beneath and silk above. Wool keeps you warm through long sits. Silk gives a smooth, clean surface. A rubber or foam exercise mat does neither. For the full teaching, see The Meditation Seat: Yogananda's Instruction, Explained.
How it differs from a yoga mat
A yoga mat is made for movement and grip. A meditation asana is made for stillness and warmth. It is softer, usually thicker, and used only for sitting.
How to use one
Lay it flat where you meditate each day. Sit on a cushion, or place a chair on or beside it. Keep it for meditation alone, and roll or fold it away with care afterwards.
Choosing one
Look for natural fibers, enough size for your cushion or chair, and a weave that holds up to daily use. Our Asana Silk & Wool Meditation Mat is made this way. You can see more in the asana collection and the cushions and blankets collection.
