स्थिरसुखमासनम्

sthira-sukham-āsanam

"The seated meditation posture must be steady and pleasant."

Benefits

  • Lifts the hips to support the natural curve of the lumbar spine
  • Reduces strain on the knees and ankles during longer sittings
  • Covered in silk and wool — materials used in the asana tradition for over a century
  • Maintains its shape and firmness through years of daily use

Materials

  • Outer cover: Raw silk and virgin wool
  • Inner fill: High-density support (varies by model)
  • No synthetic blends or chemical treatments on the fabric

Traditional Context

Paramahansa Yogananda specified in his lessons that the meditator should sit on a seat of wool and silk — materials understood in yogic tradition to insulate the body's pranic energy and resist the downward pull of earth currents. The cushion is not incidental to practice. It is where practice begins.

FAQ

What height cushion is right for me?
As a general guide — if your knees float above your hips when seated cross-legged, choose a higher cushion. If your hips tilt forward naturally, a lower or wedge style may suit better. Contact us if you are unsure.

Can I wash the cushion cover?
The silk and wool cover should be spot cleaned only. Do not machine wash. Remove the cover carefully and allow to air dry flat away from direct sunlight.

Is the cushion suitable for chair meditation?
The wedge cushion works well on a chair — placed under the sitting bones it encourages the same forward tilt of the pelvis that supports upright posture.

How long will it last?
With daily use and proper care, several years at minimum. The inner fill can be replaced if needed — contact us and we will assist.

Great little meditation bench

This is a great little meditation bench. It helps your core while you meditate but is not distracting to your meditation It is light enough to use as a portable meditation cushion for travel.

Finally my meditation posture has improved

I have been struggling with meditation posture for many years. I have tried almost all: Sitting on a cushion with different cross-legged postures, sitting on a flat chair on a suitable wedge-shaped cushion, sitting on different kind of benches, etc. Then I decided to give Ekam Meditation Bench a chance! At first I felt a bit strange due to the unique one-leg, because there is some kind of instability present (very little indeed), but finally one gets used and the posture eventually become firm and stable. Precisely, the unique one-leg allows to make some kind of adjustments to the posture during the meditation session. Once sitting on the bench I feel my back very confortable: straight but with no pressure; the shoulders are open and the hands rest over the juncture of abdomen and thighs naturally. For me (I'm 6 feet tall) the height of the bench is perfect. The bench is light but has an appearance of solidity. Since I love minimalist designs in general, I appreciate very much this beautiful bench. I love it!
