Caring for Your Silk & Wool Meditation Blanket & Shawl
Share
A piece woven for daily practice deserves to be cared for with the same gentleness you bring to your sitting. Treated well, a silk and wool blanket or shawl can serve you for decades — and one day be passed, full of quiet blessing, to someone you love.
EVERYDAY CARE
Silk and wool ask for a light touch. Spot clean only, using a little cool water and a mild soap on the area that needs it. Avoid machine washing, wringing, or harsh detergents. When a fuller refresh is needed, gentle dry cleaning is the safest path. Lay the piece flat to dry, away from direct sunlight, which can fade natural dyes over time.
KEEPING IT FRESH
Between sittings, let your blanket or shawl breathe — a few hours of fresh air does more than any spray. Fold it loosely rather than cramming it away, and store it somewhere clean and dry. For wool kept over the warmer months, a piece of cedar nearby is a natural, fragrant guard against moths.
PILLING & PATINA
Pure wool may develop a little pilling with regular use. This is simply the nature of a natural fiber and does not affect its warmth or function. A gentle pass with a fabric comb, if you wish, keeps it looking its best. In truth, a little softening with age is part of the beauty — the patina of a well-loved companion.
A PIECE SET APART
Where you can, keep one blanket or shawl solely for meditation. Just as your shrine absorbs the peace of your practice, so do the objects you use. Cared for and set apart, your piece becomes more than cloth — it becomes a quiet keeper of your stillness.
